How Donations Are Used
At Community Music School, as at many arts organizations, program income such as tuition covers less than 40% of our operating costs. Each year, we need to raise about 55% of our operating budget through gifts from generous individuals, businesses, and foundations. Thus, donations are a crucial part of our budget, and we could not operate the School without these annual gifts. Donations help keep the cost of music lessons affordable for all families, and designated gifts for scholarships and financial aid allow CMS to help students from low-income families attend the School and pay what they can afford for lessons. Piano Donations
Due to moving/storage cost and space restrictions, donations of select high-quality grand, baby grand, and upright pianos are carefully evaluated by the Executive Director on a case-by-case basis. If you have a piano that you would like to donate, please email us the photos and details of the piano for consideration. Include the make, model, manufacture date, condition, and location of the piano. We only consider pianos in or near the Lehigh Valley/Reading area. If accepted, available pianos are shared with students and teachers via our weekly e-newsletter.
Instrument Donations
We may accept donations of certain high-quality instruments in excellent playable condition. Please email a photo and description of the instrument(s) you would like to donate.
Current Instrument Needs:
Violins (sizes: 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, & full)
Guitars (acoustic or electric)
***Due to space restrictions, we are no longer accepting donations of sheet music or books.***
Instruments must be dropped off at CMS during our normal hours of operation. Appointments are preferred. Please email or call 610-435-7725 x404, after 1:30 PM on weekdays.
Donated instruments are rented or given to students in need at little or no cost to the student.

Board of Directors
As a non-profit, CMS is governed by a board of diverse local professionals and community leaders.While not necessarily musicians themselves, CMS board members are passionate about helping others access the transformative power of music education.
Fundraising & Events
Do you love a party? Help plan fundraising events, including our annual Gala Recital and Reception! Duties include securing business/individual sponsorships and auction items donations, as well as event day coordination, set-up, and clean-up.
Event Set Up & Property Beautification
Do you like to work with your hands? Help at CMS by setting up chairs and tables for recitals and weekend event rentals. If you like to work outside, regular help is needed with trash pick up, weed pulling, and seasonal landscape maintenance.
Musical Instrument Petting Zoo
Demonstrate and help children (and adults) try out a variety of instruments at community events. You do not need to know how to play every instrument, but you’ll need an outgoing personality & a desire to spread the joy of music to the community! Open to current CMS students only.
CMS offers a limited number of time and skill-specific volunteer opportunities including our Board of Directors, Fundraising & Events, Event Set Up & Property Beautification, and Musical Instrument Petting Zoo. Preference is given to current CMS students and families. If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the CMS Volunteer Inquiry Form. We will review your submission and contact you if a volunteer opportunity is currently available. If you have any questions, please contact lisa@cmslv.org.
