Penn State Lehigh Valley recently welcomed CMS teacher and Program Coordinator Kelly Hooper as a guest lecturer in its Art of Mathematics course, held in the Markowitz music room. Offered for the first time this fall, Art of Mathematics is the creation of Larry Musolino, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, and Ann Lalik, gallery director, arts coordinator, and lecturer in art. Musolino hatched the concept to counter negative perceptions of mathematics and ease the angst he’d sometimes seen in his students.  Kelly spoke about the intricacies of the harmonic series, the physics of the sound wave, and how mathematics has affected our musical preferences across hundreds of years.

CMS and PSLV share a longstanding partnership in the musical arts, thanks to founding CMS board member Martha Markowitz, her family, and Steven Markowitz, a Penn State alumnus and a former CMS Board Director, who is President of Allen Organ Company.
